New York City: Saudi Arabia, represented by the National Committee for Geographical Names, is actively participating in the fourth session of the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN), taking place from April 28 to May 2 in New York City. The Saudi delegation, comprising representatives from various government agencies, is led by Dr. Eng. Mohammed bin Yahya Al-Sayel, President of the General Authority for Survey and Geospatial Information and Chairman of the National Committee on Geographical Names.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the current session of UNGEGN is focusing on several important topics. These include reviewing reports submitted by member states, advancing the standardization of geographical names, integrating geographical names with modern technologies, and exploring the role of organizations and committees in linking geographical names to sustainable development.
During the opening session, Dr. Al-Sayel emphasized Saudi Arabia's dedication to the field of geographical names, which is strongly supported by the country's leadership. He discussed the kingdom's national and international contributions, highlighting efforts to foster international cooperation, host regional and global forums, and enhance collaboration in documenting, standardizing, and preserving geographical names. These efforts are seen as integral to development and as vital components of cultural identity and heritage.
