Health Ministers Gather at WHO Eastern Mediterranean Regional Committee Meetings in Qatar

DOHA: The 71st session of the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean, entitled "Health Beyond Borders: Action, Access, Equity," is currently underway in Qatar, led by Saudi Arabia's Health Minister Fahad Al-Jalajel. According to Saudi Press Agency, Minister Fahad Al-Jalajel is at the helm of the Kingdom's delegation at this critical gathering, which spans October 16 and 17. The session has drawn health ministers and representatives from the WHO Eastern Mediterranean countries, alongside partners and delegates from non-member states. The opening session focused on the regional priorities and introduced three main initiatives aimed at expanding equitable access to medical products, investing in a sustainable and resilient health workforce, and accelerating public health action on substance abuse. These initiatives are key components of the WHO's strategic implementation plan for the region, set for 2025-2028. The meetings will also delve into several significant publ ic health issues including health emergencies and the ongoing efforts to eradicate polio. Participants are expected to discuss a variety of topics through working papers, such as antimicrobial resistance, enhancement of health information systems, responses to challenges during humanitarian crises, and support for mental health and psychosocial aspects in emergency situations.
