Jeddah: The inaugural session of the Ministerial Council of the Middle East Green Initiative (MGI), chaired by Saudi Minister Abdulrahman Alfadley, concluded today with significant steps towards battling desertification and climate change across the Middle East and North Africa. The council, which saw participation from 29 countries and international entities, adopted crucial decisions to initiate the implementation phase of the MGI. The session underscored the need for enhanced regional collaboration to address environmental challenges and promote sustainable development. According to Saudi Press Agency, the Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Abdulrahman Alfadley, emphasized the role of the MGI as a pioneering regional alliance launched by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in 2021. The initiative aims to mitigate the impacts of climate change, enhance vegetation cover, and bolster food and water security. During the meeting, the council approved the organizational structure and internal policies of the MGI secretariat, appointed the MGI Secretary General, and selected the MGI Fund Trustee. These actions mark a pivotal shift from planning to active execution of the initiative's objectives. The council also expressed gratitude to King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for their roles in launching the initiative. Additionally, the accession of 11 new regional members and the United Kingdom as a non-regional observer was welcomed, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in achieving the initiative's goals. Further discussions focused on future strategies for land rehabilitation and vegetation development, aligning them with international environmental agreements. The council emphasized the critical contributions of the private sector, financial institutions, and civil society in combating land degradation and desertification. The session also celebrated the Kingdom's role in hosting the World Environment Day in 2024, with this year's theme "Our Land, Ou r Future" aimed at raising global awareness about ecosystem conservation. Looking ahead, the council anticipates the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, scheduled in Riyadh, as a significant opportunity for global dialogue and action on these pressing environmental issues. In conclusion, the council lauded the efforts of all member countries and the organizing committee for their dedication and commitment to the MGI's mission, setting a strong foundation for its implementation phase.
