Know how to manage and prevent diabetes for a better life

ISA proudly supports World Diabetes Day 2023 with its awareness campaign

BRUSSELS, Belgium, Nov. 14, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The International Sweeteners Association (ISA) proudly renews its support to World Diabetes Day (WDD), organised each year on 14th November by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and in 2023 with the theme ‘Know your risk, know your response’.1

1 in 10 adults worldwide, approximately 537 million people, have diabetes and half a billion more are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.2 Though, type 2 diabetes and its complications can be delayed or prevented by adopting and maintaining healthy habits, including following a balanced diet and being physically active. This is why the ISA joins the call to help increase awareness of diabetes risk and response.

Discover the latest nutritional guidelines for diabetes management
Knowing your risk of type 2 diabetes to help delay or prevent the condition is important. Knowing what to do and eat for better diabetes control is also vital! The ISA supports health professionals in staying informed of the latest evidence-based nutritional guidelines to inform discussions with patients on diabetes prevention and management. Hence, the ISA online campaign for World Diabetes Day 2023 aims to raise awareness about the importance of knowing what to eat for diabetes prevention and management, while sharing the latest nutritional guidelines for diabetes management and the recommendations for the intake of low/no calorie sweeteners in diabetes:

Low/no calorie sweeteners as part of healthy diet for people with diabetes
Alongside other cornerstones of diabetes management, a healthy diet has the potential to improve glucose control, reduce the risk of diabetes complications and improve quality of life. Diabetes and nutrition-related organisations globally recognise that low/no calorie sweeteners can be safely used by people with diabetes to help reduce overall energy and sugars intake without affecting blood glucose control, and thus be a helpful strategy to aid with glycaemic control and weight management.3-8 This was recognised, among others, in the “Evidence-based European recommendations for the dietary management of diabetes” updated in April 2023 by the Diabetes and Nutrition Study Group (DNSG) of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD)3 and by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) in their annually updated “Standards of Care in Diabetes” including the ADA’s current clinical practice and medical nutrition therapy recommendations.4

ISA activities for World Diabetes Day 2023 have been endorsed by diabetes organisations including the Brazilian diabetes association (ANAD)9, the Brazilian Association of Diabetes Educators (ANBED)10 and the Brazilian Federation of Diabetes Organisations (FENAD).11

Share the ISA campaign for World Diabetes Day 2023 on social media with your friends, family and network by using the dedicated hashtags #ISA4WDD, #WorldDiabetesDay and #KnowYourRisk.

New Report From ApplyBoard Highlights Need For Alignment Across International Education Sector

ApplyBoard’s third annual trends report uncovers the top trends in international education for 2024 and beyond

Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, Nov. 14, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — ApplyBoard, the leading international student mobility technology platform, has released its third annual trends report, intended to help stakeholders in international education navigate the increasingly competitive sector landscape. The report, Alignment for Student and Institution Success: Top Trends in International Education for 2024 and Beyond, leverages extensive industry data, proprietary ApplyBoard intelligence, exclusive surveys, and candid student interviews to uncover the trends most likely to impact student mobility in the coming years.

Demand for international education is at an all-time high. In each of Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia, student visa applications rose by at least 23% in 2022, and numbers continued to rise through 2023. With so many students going abroad, the report argues that it is essential that governments, institutions, and businesses align programs, policies, and priorities to develop more pathways for prosperity for all stakeholders. For example, institutions can better ensure student success by working with businesses to identify workforce needs and designing programs that train students capable of filling them.

“More than ever, alignment is needed across the international education sector to ensure the success of students and institutions alike,” says Meti Basiri, Co-Founder and CEO of ApplyBoard. “When governments, institutions, and businesses work collectively in pursuit of common goals, students receive a better educational experience and are better positioned to succeed during and after their studies. At ApplyBoard, we’re committed to working with our partners to bring this standard to life.”

Key findings from this year’s report include:

  • Major English-speaking destination countries face increased competition from non-Anglophone destination markets entering 2024.
  • Aging destination markets need skilled workers in areas like health and STEM, but institutions need to better align student inflows with these job market needs in order to both fill these roles and ensure student success.
    • Job demand in health care is expected to grow by at least 13% by 2031 in both Canada and the US. Aging populations require increased health care services, and international students will be critical for filling the gaps.
    • Destination markets will face significant skills shortages in STEM in the coming years, but lack of knowledge and mentorship regarding these fields mean international students are not well positioned to address these shortages.
  • Replacing retirees will require alignment on stay-and-work messaging: 48% of students interested in studying in North America and the UK are looking for a clear path to permanent residency post-degree.
  • Housing shortages, upcoming elections and new government policies will all shape student sentiment in the years to come.
  • Student diversity is needed to ensure the long-term health of the international education sector. Nigeria, the Philippines, and Colombia are three countries where strategic recruitment efforts could pay dividends for institutions.

Uncover these insights and more by reading ApplyBoard’s Trends Report online here.

Bombardier Reaffirms Commitment to Cover Totality of Flight Operations with SAF, Maintains Sustainability Leadership in Business Aviation

  • Leveraging Signature Aviation’s Book-and-Claim solution, the initiative reduces the annual greenhouse gas emissions associated with fuel in Bombardier’s flight operations by approximately 20 to 25 %.
  • The Book-and-Claim model guarantees a rigorous accounting of greenhouse gas emission reductions while optimizing logistics.
  • Bombardier continues to lead the way and take concrete actions to ensure a sustainable future for business aviation.

MONTRÉAL, Nov. 13, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Bombardier is proud to cement its industry leadership in sustainability by reaffirming its commitment to cover all its operational flights with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), utilizing the Book-and-Claim system. One year after announcing its landmark agreement with Signature Aviation, Bombardier continues to demonstrate its firm engagement to drive lasting industry change by promoting the industry-wide adoption of SAF.

“Bombardier is taking bold steps on its sustainability journey and is increasingly recognized as one of the most sustainable aviation companies. Our commitment to cover our flight operations with SAF, a first in the business aviation industry, is another demonstration of the serious, tangible actions we are taking to align with our values,” said Eric Martel, President and CEO, Bombardier. “The Bombardier team strongly believes that operating with sustainability in mind is the only way forward, and we are proud to rise to the challenge again today.”

Operational flights are part of Bombardier’s regular activities, and notably include production testing, certification flights, transiting Global aircrafts from Toronto to Montréal to perform the completion stages, customer demonstration flights, new aircraft platforms certifications and after-service check flights. By using a blend with 30% of pure sustainable aviation fuel, Bombardier anticipates to reduce its annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (scope 1) from fuel use in its flight operations by approximately 20 – 25%. The 2023 SAF usage in flight operation through the Book-and-Claim system will be reflected in Bombardier’s 2023 scope 1 CO2 emissions that will be published in May 2024.

This major annual gain supports Bombardier’s previously announced objective of reducing 25% of GHG emissions (scope 1 and 2) by 2025, compared to 2019 levels. Bombardier’s 2025 objective is aligned with the business aviation industry’s goal of achieving a net-zero emissions by 2050.

Approved sources to produce sustainable fuels are feedstocks such as used cooking oils, forestry residues and agricultural residues. These cannot come from lands with high biodiversity or carbon stocks, cannot compete with the food chain, and must provide a societal benefit through the development of this new activity. The reduction of GHG emissions associated with sustainable aviation fuels is achieved throughout their life cycle, not just at the time of in-flight consumption.

Considering that Bombardier has flight operations in many locations around the world where SAF is not produced nearby, the Book-and-Claim system is the most effective method to limit the negative impact of transporting these fuels over long distances. With this system, a user located near a SAF production site uses SAF in their flights. The GHG reductions associated with this use are claimed, in exchange for the additional cost of SAF, by another user located at a site where SAF is not available.
